The Portal Panthers suffered their biggest defeat since December 5, 2023 on Friday. Their rough 50-28 defeat to Montgomery County might stick with them for a while. Portal has not had much luck with Montgomery County recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.
Portal lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Glen Lowe, who scored seven points along with five rebounds and two steals. Lowe is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Raashonda Khalil, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds.
Portal struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Montgomery County racked up 14 assists.
Montgomery County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marley Bell, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Bell has scored at least a third of Montgomery County's points. Amire Banks was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with nine assists and six rebounds.
Portal bumped their record down to 5-9 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.2 points per game. As for Montgomery County, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 13-0.
Portal will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Vidalia at 4:00 p.m. As for Montgomery County, they will head out on the road to take on Treutlen at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Treutlen will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 337th, while Montgomery County is ranked 66th).
