Wayland and Hopkins are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. Wayland will take on Hopkins at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wayland is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
Wayland barely beat Union the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Wayland blew past Union 11-3 on Thursday.
Wayland got a great performance from Will Lodenstein as he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bredan Byrne, who scored two runs and stole four bases while going 1-for-3. Byrne is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Trent Sikkema, who scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Hopkins posted their closest victory since May 4, 2024 last Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Plainwell, sneaking past 8-6. The win continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the Trojans: they've now won three in a row.
Kellen Ford was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over 4.1 innings pitched. Ford was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Landen Dandrow was excellent, scoring two runs while going 1-for-1. Christian Smigiel was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
Wayland pushed their record up to 3-0 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season.the team's perfect season has a lot to do with their hitting performance: the team won's by an average of 8 runs thus far As for Hopkins, the win got them back to even at 1-1.
Wayland couldn't quite get it done against Hopkins when the teams last played back in May of 2019 as they fell 11-7. Can Wayland avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
