Jack Gohlke had a NCAA Tournament game to remember Thursday when he hit 10 3-pointers to help No. 14 seed Oakland defeat No. 3 Kentucky 80-76.
The
Pewaukee (Wis.) graduate launched 20 3-point shots off the bench and buried half of them for the underdog Golden Grizzlies.
Gohlke played three years of high school basketball and graduated from Pewaukee in 2018. The Pirates had success, going 63-11 in that span with three playoff runs.
While he played against Alex Antetokounmpo and 2024 NFL Draft prospect J.C. Latham, he matched up with
Tyler Herro and
Whitnall (Greenfield, Wis.) five times, including twice in the postseason.
Pewaukee won two of the five games against Whitnall and the teams split the two postseason contests.
As seniors in 2017-18 it was Gohlke's Pirates who ended the season and high school career of Herro by a score of 60-59. Herro had 24 points that night while Gohlke had eight.
The two teams had met in the regular season just a few weeks earlier and Whitnall walked away with that win as Herro had 39 points and Gohlke scored 24.
After high school Gohlke went to Division II Hillsdale College where he helped lead the Chargers to their first Elite Eight in school history in 2022-23.
With a year of eligibility remaining, he went to Oakland as a graduate transfer and jumped right into the rotation, averaging 29.7 minutes and 12.8 points per game. Prior to his career-high 32 against Kentucky, he had topped 20 points on four occasions.
Oakland will face North Carolina State tomorrow in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
