Basketball Recap: Cortez Takes a Loss

Cortez lost against Dysart back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Cortez Colts came up short against the Dysart Demons, falling 62-37. The game marked the Colts' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Loss or not, Cortez got some senior leadership from Ulysses Espinoza and Nygel Lindsey. Espinoza went 5 of 12 en route to 13 points and three steals, while Lindsey posted seven points in addition to six rebounds and three blocks. That's the most blocks Lindsey has posted since back in January of 2024. Tylin Hunter also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Dysart to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lamar Anderson, who went 5 for 8 on his way to 11 points along with six assists and five boards. Anderson is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Santiago Leyva was another key player, going 5 of 7 en route to 11 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals.

Cortez's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 11-3. As for Dysart, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season.

Cortez wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 53-41 win against Coronado on the 28th. As for Dysart, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-44 victory against Tempe on the 28th.
