The Copper Canyon Aztecs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They fell just short of Marana by a score of 52-49. Copper Canyon found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and post eight fewer assists than your opponent.
Despite the loss, Copper Canyon had strong showings from Bri'ann Felix, who scored 25 points along with seven rebounds and five steals, and Zalaya Dupre, who scored 22 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Felix scored a full 51% of Copper Canyon's points, the 11th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Leading Marana to victory were Adrian Griffin and Katelynne Hendrickson. Griffin scored 18 points along with five assists, while Hendrickson scored 20 points along with eight rebounds. The contest was Griffin's fourth in a row with at least ten points.
Copper Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 4-7. As for Marana, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-12.
Copper Canyon and High Tech SD will face off at 10:30 a.m. on December 29, 2023 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. High Tech SD will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 533rd in California, while Copper Canyon is ranked 219th in Arizona). Marana and Desert Ridge will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 4th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Desert Ridge focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Saturday.
