The Corning Cardinals will venture away from home to square off against the Colusa RedHawks at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Corning took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Friday. They walked away with a 10-6 win over Live Oak. The contest marked the Cardinals' most dominant victory of the season.
The team relied heavily on Miley Garcia, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Alexys Lynch also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, Colusa entered their tilt with Willows on Friday with seven consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with eight. They put the hurt on the Honkers with a sharp 19-3 win. The RedHawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 games by seven runs or more this season.
Braelyn Santana was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Caeden Agnew was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Elli Santana was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
Colusa was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in eight consecutive matches.
Colusa's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games. As for Corning, their record is now 3-12.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Corning hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Colusa struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Corning might still be hurting after the 12-0 defeat they got from Colusa when the teams last played back in March. Can the Cardinals avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
