The Maple Heights Mustangs will head out on the road to take on the Wickliffe Blue Devils at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Maple Heights can't be too happy about their upcoming road contest considering what happened when they opened their season away from home on Thursday. They came up short against Kirtland, falling 15-3. The Mustangs have struggled against the Hornets recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Stephen Tillis made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Wickliffe and John Hay meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Saturday. The Blue Devils never let the Hornets get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. The Blue Devils haven't had any issues with the Hornets recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Alex Aheimer made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Aheimer was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2025.
In other pitching news, Gio Moppins looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and only one walk).
Back at the plate, Cole Vanatta was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Ludvik, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Maple Heights might still be hurting after the 16-4 loss they got from Wickliffe when the teams last played back in March of 2025. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
