SA Roosevelt hasn't had much luck against Johnson recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The SA Roosevelt Rough Riders will look to defend their home court against the Johnson Jaguars at 12:30 p.m.
Last Friday, SA Roosevelt came up short against Reagan and fell 33-20. While losing is never fun, the Rough Riders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 861st, while the Rattlers are ranked 197th).
The losing side was boosted by Maddie Castillo, who posted seven points and three steals. That was a full 35% of SA Roosevelt's points, marking the third time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points.
Johnson played in conference for the first time last Friday and they got just the result they we're looking for. They walked away with a 65-55 win over Brandeis. With that victory, the Jaguars brought their scoring average up to 50.4 points per game.
Johnson's win came from a few key players SA Roosevelt will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jera Salters, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Sara Mcfarlin, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 rebounds.
Johnson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in five consecutive matches.
SA Roosevelt's defeat dropped their record down to 6-13. As for Johnson, their win bumped their record up to 16-8.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: SA Roosevelt has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 23.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Johnson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
SA Roosevelt was dealt a bruising 62-29 loss at the hands of Johnson in their previous meeting back in January. Can SA Roosevelt avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
