Sumner is 7-2 against Bonney Lake since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Sumner Spartans will finish 2023 at home by hosting the Bonney Lake Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Sumner comes in on seven and Bonney Lake on eight.
Sumner has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 26 points or more this season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Wednesday as they easily beat Eisenhower 77-35 at home. Given Sumner's advantage in MaxPreps' Washington basketball rankings (they are ranked fifth, while Eisenhower is ranked 184th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sumner's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lainee Houillon, who scored 20 points along with four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Houillon has scored at least 25% of Sumner's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kawehi Borden, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Meanwhile, Bonney Lake earned a 47-38 win over Emerald Ridge on Thursday.
Sumner's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.7 points per game. As for Bonney Lake, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.
Sumner was able to grind out a solid victory over Bonney Lake in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, winning 65-52. Will Sumner repeat their success, or does Bonney Lake have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
