Being recruited as a linebacker at the college level,
Kaegan Ash of
Mt. Enterprise (Texas) may have coaches re-thinking that with his production as a running back this season.
In his team's Conference 2A Division 2 playoff opener last week, Ash eclipsed the 10,000-yard rushing mark for his career with 345 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries – an average of
31.4 yards per attempt – in a 70-14 win over
West Hardin (Saratoga). See highlights via the NFHS Network in the video.
The 6-foot, 210-pound four-star prospect is committed to Texas Tech commit as a linebacker. But he has made the most noise for Mt. Enterprise (11-0) with the ball in his hands this season, running for 3,208 yards and 51 touchdowns on an average of 291.6 yards per game.
Ash had a two-game stretch in October where he ran for more than 1,000 yards, going for 495 yards in an 82-60 win over
Lovelady and then 599 more in a 60-42 win against
Overton. He also had seven rushing TDs in each of those contests.
The future Red Raider has scored multiple touchdowns in every game this season with 59 total scores on the year and 158 for his career. On the defensive side, Ash has 80 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.
Ash leads the nation in yards per carry at 17.92, is fifth in the country in rushing yards and ranks second behind
Myles McLaughlin of
Knox (Ind.) in total touchdowns and points scored. While McLaughlin is just six points away from breaking the single-season points record, Ash could potentially surpass that mark as well as he is just 51 points away from
Sheridan (Ind.) alum Brett Law's mark of 453 from 1988.
Ash is a multi-sport athlete. In two previous varsity seasons on the basketball court, he averaged 18.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. He is also one of the state's top triple jumpers in the spring.
Ash and Mt. Enterprise continue their postseason run Friday against
Chilton. The contest will be streamed live by the
NFHS Network.
