Chaparral is 9-1 against the Mustangs since January of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Chaparral Wolverines will be playing in front of their home fans against the Ponderosa Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. Ponderosa took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Chaparral, who comes in off a win.
After only 18 points in their last game, Chaparral made sure to put some points up on the board against the Eagles on Tuesday. Chaparral simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Eagles 59-30 at home. Given Chaparral's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Eagles are ranked 176th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Chaparral can attribute much of their success to Lauren Thompson, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds, and Reagan Lentell, who scored 21 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Lentell has scored all season. Maddie Jenkins was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Meanwhile, Ponderosa took a serious blow against the Grizzlies on Tuesday, falling 63-28.
Despite the defeat, Ponderosa got a solid performance out of Maddison Neale, who scored 19 points along with four steals.
Chaparral has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. As for Ponderosa, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Chaparral have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Ponderosa struggles in that department as they've been averaging 24.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Chaparral against the Mustangs in their previous matchup back in December of 2023 as the team secured a 64-33 win. Does Chaparral have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
