West Mesa is 0-3 against Los Lunas since March of 2015 but things could change on Tuesday. The Mustangs will look to defend their home field against the Tigers at 3:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
The home team had won the previous six meetings between West Mesa and Albuquerque, and West Mesa kept the tradition alive. The Mustangs came out on top against the Bulldogs by a score of 20-16 on Friday. With that win, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
West Mesa got a massive performance out of Ayden Gonzales, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four RBI and two runs. That's the most RBI Gonzales has posted since back in February. Scott Wilson was another key player, going 2-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Los Lunas duked it out with Atrisco Heritage Academy on Monday. The Tigers were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over the Jaguars.
Kaiden Reese was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Reese was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
In other batting news, Jonah Utash was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and four runs. Another player making a difference was Jasiah Byers, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
Los Lunas was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Los Lunas has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for West Mesa, with the win, they broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 8-14.
