High school football rankings: Mater Dei headlines five MaxPreps Top 25 teams in California's Southern Section Division 1 playoff bracket

The quarterfinals of the toughest postseason bracket in high school football gets underway this week in California. The Southern Section Division 1 field features five MaxPreps Top 25 teams — No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana), No. 7 St. John Bosco (Bellflower), No. 9 Mission Viejo, No. 16 Orange Lutheran (Orange) and No. 23 Centennial (Corona).

Top-ranked Mater Dei hosts Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), Bosco welcomes Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) to Panish Family Stadium, Orange Lutheran hosts JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) and Centennial travels to Mission Viejo. All four matchups are on Friday.

The Texas Class 6A Division 1 bracket was released Saturday features four MaxPreps Top 25 teams — No. 3 Duncanville, No. 6 North Shore (Houston), No. 10 North Crowley (Fort Worth) and No. 19 Atascocita (Humble).

Duncanville and North Shore have met in five of the last six Class 6A Division 1 state championship games. North Shore won in 2018, 2019 and 2021 while Duncanville heads into the playoffs as the back-to-back state champs.

No. 11 Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.) goes for its third consecutive MIAA-A championship against Calvert Hall (Baltimore) on Saturday. The Cavaliers posted their eighth shutout of the season with a 38-0 win over Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore) last week. They have outscored the opposition 456-27.

In Kentucky, No. 13 Boyle County (Danville) extended its winning streak to 31 with a 57-7 win over Perry County Central (Hazard) in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs. The four-time defending state champs have won 20 straight games in the postseason as they face Letcher County Central (Whitesburg) on Friday.

In Utah, No. 20 Corner Canyon (Draper) punched its ticket to the 6A semifinals with a 59-34 win over Weber (Pleasant View). Bronson Evans has filled in at quarterback for the Chargers since Helaman Casuga got hurt in September and completed 13 of 17 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns last week. Three-star offensive lineman Zion Finau added two rushing scores, upping his team-leading total to 12 on the season. The Chargers face Lehi on Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
