Lance McCullers is expected to make his debut on the mound for the Houston Astros tonight in their game against the Oakland A's.
The 41st overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, McCullers had a 0.62 ERA with 43 strikeouts and 11 walks in 29 innings pitched at the Double-A level this year, according to MLB.com. McCullers was 3-1 for the Double-A team in Corpus Christi and he briefly pitched for Triple-A Fresno.
McCullers, whose father Lance Sr. pitched in the Major Leagues, attended
Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.), where he was a MaxPreps All-American his senior year. He posted a 13-0 record with 140 strikeouts and 0.18 ERA in 77.1 innings pitched in leading Jesuit to a 28-2 record. He and his father were each drafted 41st overall,
according to a Houston Chronicle story.
As a freshman, McCullers earned MaxPreps Freshman of the Year honors while batting .443 with five home runs.
McCullers had a career pitching record of 20-3 with 263 strikeouts and a 0.82 ERA in 154.1 innings pitched.
