Basketball Game Preview: Durham Academy Cavaliers vs. Riverside-Durham Pirates

The Durham Academy Cavaliers will venture away from home to take on the Riverside-Durham Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Durham Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 71.7 points per game this season.

Durham Academy is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing Charlotte Christian: they outscored them in every quarter. Durham Academy greeted the New Year with with a 72-56 win over Charlotte Christian. Given the Cavaliers' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 141st, while the Knights are ranked 351st), the result on Saturday wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Quin Frasher, who went 8 for 11 on his way to 21 points in addition to five assists and five boards. Those five assists gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Joshua Dorsette II, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 16 points and three steals.

Meanwhile, Riverside-Durham ended up a good deal behind Athens Drive on Monday and lost 63-44. That's two games in a row now that the Pirates have lost by exactly 19 points.

Durham Academy is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.8 points per game. As for Riverside-Durham, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-9.

Durham Academy couldn't quite finish off Riverside-Durham in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 and fell 53-51. Thankfully for Durham Academy, Corey Hairston Jr. (who went 7 of 16 on his way to 17 points in addition to six boards and five assists) won't be suiting up this time.
