Mt. Pleasant and Summertown are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2020, but not for long. The Mt. Pleasant Tigers will take on the Summertown Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mt. Pleasant is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 61.8 points per game this season.
Mt. Pleasant is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Loretto just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Friday. They fell to the Mustangs 36-32. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 156th, while the Mustangs are ranked 21st).
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Micah Dale, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden McClure, who posted eight points.
Meanwhile, Summertown beat Perry County 69-59 on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Mt. Pleasant better keep an eye on Kurt Burleson. He was instrumental in Summertown's win, almost dropping a double-double on 26 points and nine rebounds. The contest was Burleson's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Sawyer Sherman was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.
Summertown is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.9 points per game. As for Mt. Pleasant, their loss ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Mt. Pleasant has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 29.8 boards per game. However, it's not like Summertown struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Mt. Pleasant came up short against Summertown when the teams last played back in January, falling 61-57. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Burleson, who dropped a double-double on 34 points and 12 boards. Now that Mt. Pleasant knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
