Basketball Recap: Simeon Falls Despite Big Games from Gabby Howard and Dijiona Berrien

After flying high against Morgan Park last Wednesday, Simeon came back down to earth. The Simeon Wolverines lost to the Westinghouse Warriors on the road by a 59-45 margin on Friday. The Wolverines were not able to make up for their defeat to the Warriors from their previous meeting back in January of 2024.

Dijiona Berrien and Gabby Howard certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Berrien dropped a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Howard posted 12 points and five boards. That's the most points Berrien has posted since back in November of 2024.

Even though they lost, Simeon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Leading Westinghouse to victory were Jamilah Jackson and Tiara Harris. Jackson almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine steals, while Harris had 23 points along with seven boards and five assists. Harris continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amariyae Ervin, who scored 13 points and seven rebounds.

Simeon's loss dropped their record down to 10-12. As for Westinghouse, their victory bumped their record up to 10-11.

Simeon didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-45 win against IC Catholic Prep on the 28th. Westinghouse has also already played their next contest, a 60-34 victory against Lincoln Park on the 28th.
