The Mission Valley Vikings fought the good fight in their overtime contest against the Northern Heights Wildcats on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 62-59. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
When it comes to explaining why Mission Valley lost, one person who can't be blamed is Porter Deters. Despite the final result, he scored 22 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Deters pulled down eight or more rebounds. Hunter Tenbrink was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with four steals.
Mission Valley are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6. As for Northern Heights, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 1-7.
Mission Valley's road trip will continue as they head out to face Central Heights at 10:30 a.m. on January 20th. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Ethan Rowan and Tenbrink. As for Northern Heights, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against West Franklin. West Franklin presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Northern Heights in Kansas (West Franklin is ranked 89th, while Northern Heights is ranked 321st).
