Southern Wayne and Fike are an even 3-3 against one another since January of 2022, but not for long. The Southern Wayne Saints will be playing in front of their home fans against the Fike Demons at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Southern Wayne was fully in charge, breezing past Smithfield-Selma 52-17 on the road. With Southern Wayne ahead 33-11 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Southern Wayne got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Nevaeh Hines-Bass out in front who scored 18 points along with two steals. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Hines-Bass has scored at least a third of Southern Wayne's points. Wilberline Senatus was another key contributor, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 12 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Fike had already won ten in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points), and they went ahead and made it 11 on Monday. They blew past Smithfield-Selma 51-4 at home. Given Fike's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 121st, while Smithfield-Selma is ranked 595th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jewel Brewington was her usual excellent self, scoring 20 points. She has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jalia Daniels, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds.
Southern Wayne has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a massive bump to their 9-13 record this season. As for Fike, their win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-3.
Southern Wayne was taken down by Fike 59-8 in their previous matchup back in January. That match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Southern Wayne was down 37-6.
