The Shullsburg Miners kicked off their season on the road on Tuesday and hit a couple of potholes. They took a 50-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of Scales Mound. Shullsburg has struggled against Scales Mound recently, as their match on Tuesday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Several Miners players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was JJ Berendes, who scored 17 points along with 6 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Heath Poppy, who dropped a double-double on 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Scales Mound's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Evan Cogan, who scored 9 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Cogan is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Thomas Hereau was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Shullsburg's loss dropped their record down to 0-1. As for Scales Mound, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.
Shullsburg will head out on the road to face off against Argyle at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Scales Mound, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Belleville at 6:30 p.m. on December 2nd. Belleville will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 112th in Wisconsin, while Scales Mound is ranked 28th in Illinois).
