With a playoff win on the line, Newton rose to the challenge on Friday. They breezed past the De Kalb Bears to the tune of 68-0. The Eagles are really starting to get used to good results now that the team has won 11 straight.
Kendray Porter was his usual excellent self, rushing for 219 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries. Those 219 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Dayland Alfred was another key rusher, rushing for 61 yards and a pair of TDs.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Newton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 445 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Newton's defense and their seven sacks. Leading the way was Justin Bray with two. Newton received some extra help from Dylan Walker, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Despite the defeat, De Kalb saw an underclassman step up: freshman Maddux Burgin rushed for 111 yards and one score. Those 111 rushing yards set a new season-high mark for Burgin.
Newton's record is now 11-1. As for De Kalb, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5.
Looking ahead, Newton will challenge Troup at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 965 yards in their previous games. De Kalb does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
