Two dominant guards in Eli Stevens and Jalen Williams are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Madison Warhawks will head out on the road to challenge the San Marcos Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Madison has struggled recently with 11 defeats in a row, while San Marcos will arrive with four straight wins.
Madison struggled with assists on Friday (Cathedral Catholic had 13 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Madison was beaten by Cathedral Catholic 83-43. While losing is never fun, Madison can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 569th, while Cathedral Catholic is ranked 99th).
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Stevens, who scored 12 points. Another player making a difference was Allen Sola, who scored seven points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, San Marcos strolled past Mission Hills with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 62-48.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead San Marcos to victory, but perhaps none more so than Williams, who scored 20 points along with seven steals. Mazen El Bissat was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Madison dropped their record down to 9-19 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight at home. As for San Marcos, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 22-6 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Madison have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30 rebounds per game. However, it's not like San Marcos struggles in that department as they've been averaging 32.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Madison ended up a good deal behind San Marcos in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, losing 69-53. Can Madison avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
