Gorham is 8-2 against South Portland since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Rams will be playing in front of their home fans against the Red Riots at 4:30 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Gorham barely beat Scarborough the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Rams put the hurt on the Red Storm with a sharp 12-6 victory on Monday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Rams.
Bella McBrady made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits. McBrady was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Cam Allen and Sawyer VonderHaar did most of the damage at the plate: Allen went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and five runs, while VonderHaar got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Viannah Vercoe was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Gorham kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in May of 2025.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Portland). They never let Deering get on the board and left with a 21-0 win on Friday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Red Riots with their most commanding win of the season.
Like Gorham, South Portland also got a great game from a two-way player: Maggie Berry. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Berry has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That RBI was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Lucy Wetzel was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in May of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Annie Soucy, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Gorham's victory bumped their record up to 2-0. As for South Portland, their win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-3.
Gorham beat South Portland 7-3 when the teams last played back in May of 2025. Will the Rams repeat their success, or do the Red Riots have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
