The Cardinal Mooney Cougars will venture away from home to face off against the Riverview Sarasota Rams at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Cardinal Mooney is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Cardinal Mooney had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 15-run drubbing they dealt Southeast on Thursday. The Cougars never let the Seminoles get on the board and left with a 15-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Seminoles: they've now won nine in a row.
Erin Sugg and Erin Griffith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Sugg pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Griffith tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Sugg has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sugg scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Griffith scored two runs while going 1-for-2. That's the most runs Sugg has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia Lockhart, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Victoria McMahon, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
Cardinal Mooney always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .688. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southeast only posted an OBP of .474.
Meanwhile, Riverview Sarasota fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Lakewood Ranch on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 3-2. The loss was the Rams' first of the season.
Not much got past Allison Cole, who gave up just seven hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep Lakewood Ranch off the board.
At the plate, Riverview Sarasota saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ella Trandem, who went 2-for-4 with one double.
Cardinal Mooney's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Riverview Sarasota, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 14-1.
Both Cardinal Mooney and Riverview Sarasota just can't seem to miss. The Cougars have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.9 hits per game. However, it's not like Riverview Sarasota struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cardinal Mooney suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Riverview Sarasota in their previous matchup back in February of 2021. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
