Strong quarterback play can change a team's fortunes in a positive way. Lehi offers a textbook example of the impact a good quarterback can make.
The Pioneers are 4-1 midway through the season and are averaging 38.4 points per game with Cammon Cooper at the controls of the offense. Cooper, a junior, has thrown for 1,716 yards and 21 touchdowns while averaging 343.2 yards per game. He has Lehi in position to both finish with a winning record and qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Cooper headlines the list of Utah high school quarterbacks challenging to eclipse 2,500 passing yards this season. In many cases, these quarterbacks have led their team to take a major step up from where they were a year ago.
Dylan Krans has West Jordan on pace to finish with its first winning record since 2009. Krans has helped the Jaguars start 4-1 while throwing for 1,379 yards and 17 touchdowns. Alta (5-0) is off to its best start since 2003 and is looking like a legit Class 4A state title contender. Will Dana has played a key role in making it happen. Dana has thrown for 1,263 yards and 16 touchdowns while registering an impressive 132.8 quarterback rating.
Dominant quarterbacks are making a major difference in lower classifications as well. South Summit junior Nick Beasley has helped the Wildcats get out to a 5-0 start for the third time in four seasons with his passing ability. Beasley has thrown for 1,248 yards and 16 touchdowns so far while running a triple-option offense.
