Fish Manning was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.
Manning wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Nik Bielaczyc, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs and two doubles. Bielaczyc is becoming a predictor of Layton's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-9 when he doesn't). Zane Morgan was another, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Layton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Syracuse only managed five hits.
Meanwhile, Davis faced Fremont in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Darts had just enough and edged out the Silverwolves 6-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Davis pushed their record up to 11-5 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 2.33 runs across that stretch. As for Layton, their record is now 6-9.
