After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Seventy-First, the Cape Fear Colts were happy to have found some success on Tuesday. They claimed a resounding 72-31 victory over Douglas Byrd on the road. That 41 point margin sets a new team best for Cape Fear this season.
Cape Fear's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Damien Gary led the charge by dropping a double-double on 11 points and 11 assists. Gary also pulled down eight rebounds for the first time this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Mehakai Coleman, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds.
Douglas Byrd's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Darnell Hinson, who scored eight points.
Cape Fear's victory bumped their record up to 8-11. As for Douglas Byrd, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-20.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cape Fear won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Fairmont at 6:30 p.m. on February 7th. Cape Fear will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 417th, while Fairmont is ranked 141st). As for Douglas Byrd, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Lumberton at 7:30 p.m. on February 9th.
