The Hoggard Vikings won the last time they faced the Laney Buccaneers, and things went their way on Friday too. Hoggard enjoyed a cozy 52-38 victory over Laney. Given Hoggard's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 23rd, while Laney is ranked 142nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Hoggard found their leader in underclassman Tristan Shivers, who scored 19 points along with seven assists and five steals. The matchup was Shivers' 13th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarah Elgart, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Laney lost, one person who can't be blamed is Piper Conklin. Despite the final result, she scored 14 points. Another player making a difference was Aniece Lewis, who scored 11 points.
Hoggard's win was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-1. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 32.75 points. As for Laney, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-3 record this season.
Hoggard will be playing at home against Topsail at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Laney, they will head out on the road to face off against South Brunswick at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully South Brunswick focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday.
