Mayfield is 2-8 against South since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Wildcats will take on the Rebels at 4:30 p.m. Mayfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Mineral Ridge hit Mayfield with a six-run fifth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Wildcats came up short against the Rams, falling 12-2. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, the Wildcats couldn't push the score so high this time.
Mayfield saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sarah Piazza, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, South made easy work of Geneva on Saturday and carried off a 12-4 win. The Rebels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by eight runs or more this season.
Halle Zupancic made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. Zupancic was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Mariya Reed was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2025. Ava Proctor was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
South was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .441. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
South's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Mayfield, their loss dropped their record down to 7-3.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mayfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .344. However, it's not like South struggles in that department as they've averaged .369. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mayfield suffered a grim 7-1 defeat to South in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
