Douglas County is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will host the Fountain-Fort Carson Trojans at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Douglas County lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Chatfield, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday's matchup. The Huskies put the hurt on the Chargers with a sharp 44-20 win on Thursday. With the Huskies ahead 31-6 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Nolan Case continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 270 yards and four scores while picking up 10.4 yards per carry. His longest rush was for an incredible 95 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Douglas County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 331 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in four consecutive contests.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Adan Andrade, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Fountain-Fort Carson got themselves on the board against Lakewood last Friday, but Lakewood never followed suit. They breezed past the Tigers to the tune of 51-0. The victory was familiar territory for the Trojans, who have now won four matchups in a row.
Douglas County better focus on containing Da'Kari Releford Jr and Jaylen Martin as the pair were huge in Fountain-Fort Carson's win. Releford Jr rushed for 147 yards and three TDs on only eight carries, while Martin rushed for 70 yards and one touchdown on only five carries. Releford Jr is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 106 every time he's taken the field this season.
Fountain-Fort Carson didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Leading the way was Cody Greiner and his one interception.
Douglas County's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Fountain-Fort Carson, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 4-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Douglas County has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 207 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Fountain-Fort Carson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 162.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Douglas County skirted past Fountain-Fort Carson 20-17 in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Releford Jr, who rushed for 61 yards and a pair of scores. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Huskies still be able to contain Releford Jr? There's only one way to find out.
