2A District 1 recap September 24, 2013
Crownpoint was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in 2A District 1. The Eagles beat Newcomb 14-0 earlier in the week.
Ramah fell to Thoreau 44-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Todd Estate ran for 51 yards and caught 3 passes for 17 yards in the loss.
Tyler Sice put up the best numbers through the air as Ramah lost to the Hawks. He had a total of 5 completions for 46 yards. Sice's favorite target this week was Tyson Bond, who caught 3 passes for 27 yards.
Aaron Yazzie was the best wideout in the league this week as Tohatchi lost to Magdalena. Yazzie tallied 2 receptions for 25 yards.
Daniel Lee provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Cougars lost to the Steers.
Lee was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 59 yards on 6 carries as Tohatchi lost to Magdalena. Luke Gibson also contributed to the rushing game with 20 yards on the ground.
Mark Chandler's team's Justin Smith and Marcus Burbank have formed a dream team this season, leading 2A District 1 in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 592 yards this season, while Burbank, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 11 catches for 374 yards. Domenic Mahooty from Zuni leads the league in rushing with 142 yards.
Laguna Acoma made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 12,445 from 12,989. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 51-24 victory over Socorro last week.
