The Gulf Breeze Dolphins fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Navarre Raiders on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 78-69 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Raiders. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Friday (61), Gulf Breeze still had to take the loss.
When it comes to explaining why Gulf Breeze lost, one person who can't be blamed is Trent Peak. Despite the final result, he scored 29 points along with five rebounds. Peak scored a full 42% of Gulf Breeze's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick O'Grady, who scored four points along with 18 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Gulf Breeze were working as a unit and finished the game with 21 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Navarre only racked up ten assists.
Darius Cunningham was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 42 points and 15 rebounds for Navarre. The match was Cunningham's 16th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Trey Brauns, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds.
Gulf Breeze has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-5 record this season. As for Navarre, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-7.
Gulf Breeze won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Florida State University High School at 5:00 p.m. on January 6th. Florida State University High School is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. As for Navarre, they will square off against Fort Walton Beach at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Fort Walton Beach focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 last Friday.
