If the Amundsen Vikings were riding high off their 52-15 takedown of the Rowe-Clark Masai Lions on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Amundsen fell just short of Simeon by a score of 37-34.
Amundsen's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Grace Higgins, who scored 11 points. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Hannah Lopez, who scored 12 points.
Simeon's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Dijiona Berrien, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 rebounds. Berrien is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Mariyah Robinson, who scored four points along with nine steals and five rebounds.
Amundsen has not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-9 record this season. As for Simeon, the win got them back to even at 6-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Amundsen will square off against Regina Dominican at 1:30 p.m. on January 6th. Simeon will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Hyde Park at 5:00 p.m. on January 10th. Hyde Park presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Simeon in Illinois (Hyde Park is ranked 122nd, while Simeon is ranked 323rd).
