Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in
high school basketball. America's source for high school sports
continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the
top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and
individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Tahlan Pettway of
North (Worcester) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Massachusetts High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-11 junior guard led the Polar Bears to a 24-2 record and the school's first Division I state championship.
For the season, Pettway averaged 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game. He poured in 22 points in the state final win along with two rebounds and two assists.
After starting the season 3-2, Pettway helped North rattle off 21 consecutive wins to finish the season.
Mike Loughnane of
Boston College High (Boston) was the 2021-22 Massachusetts Player of the
Year.
Currently spending a post-graduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy, Loughnane helped guide the Eagles to an unbeaten season.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for
inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in
