The Elbert County Blue Devils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight loss. They ended up on the wrong side of a tough 68-48 walloping at the hands of Athens Academy. While losing is never fun, Elbert County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 425th, while Athens Academy is ranked 116th).
Elbert County's loss came despite strong showings from Kamaurion Givens and Grady Jones. Givens scored 13 points along with 5 rebounds, while Jones scored 14 points along with 8 rebounds.
The last time Elbert County won on the road was back on Tuesday. Having now lost four straight away matches, they've bumped their record down to 1-6. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.8 points per game. As for Athens Academy, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elbert County will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against Madison County at 7:30 p.m. on December 9th. Madison County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matches -- so hopefully Elbert County likes a good challenge. As for Athens Academy, they will head out on the road to face off against Tallulah Falls at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
