Video: DeMatha beat Miami Central a week agoNo. 4
DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) traveled to Florida and hung on to defeat No. 19
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) 23-22.
A missed extra point by American Heritage with less than a minute to play secured the victory for DeMatha, which notched an impressive victory over Miami Central a week ago.
The Maryland power raced to a 16-3 lead at the half thanks to two touchdowns and a safety.
American Heritage scored in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 16-9. However, a
Khory Spruill touchdown run expanded DeMatha's lead to 23-9.
After scoring a touchdown to trim the gap to 23-16, American Heritage's
Khalil Herbert broke loose for a 45-yard score with 53 seconds remaining.
American Heritage had a chance to tie the game and potentially send it to overtime, but two penalties pushed the extra point attempt back. It sailed wide right, dashing American Heritage's hopes of remaining unbeaten.
The victory further bolsters DeMatha's resume for a No. 1 national ranking. Following a bye week, it will take on Philadelphia-area power LaSalle before beginning its Washington Catholic Athletic Conference schedule.

DeMatha raced to its second consecutive victory over an opponent from Florida.
