The Avon Park Red Devils will challenge the Lakeland Dreadnaughts at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Avon Park is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Avon Park was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Clewiston on Tuesday. The Red Devils were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over the Tigers. The Red Devils haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Sophia Heston was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-2. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Skylar Hicks, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Kamya Brassell was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Avon Park always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They are 5-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 19 runs the game before, Lakeland was a bit more limited in their game on Thursday. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mulberry. The defeat continues a trend for the Dreadnaughts in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost six in a row.
Lakeland's loss dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Avon Park, their victory bumped their record up to 7-5.
Avon Park's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Red Devils have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Lakeland, though, as they've been averaging only 0.5 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Avon Park continue to outrun the ball?
Avon Park took their win against Lakeland in their previous matchup last Monday by a conclusive 15-1 score. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Dreadnaughts have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
