On Thursday, the Mesquite Wildcats faced the Seton Catholic Sentinels in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mesquite skirted past Seton Catholic 40-37. Winning may never get old, but Mesquite sure is getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Mesquite was led to victory by Lucy Fisher and Navae Guidry. Fisher scored eight points along with six steals and five rebounds, while Guidry dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds. Guidry hasn't dropped below 15 points for four straight games. Pippa Krieger was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Several Sentinels players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sophie Morales, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Morales is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Raigan Gregston, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Mesquite is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 20-3 record this season. As for Seton Catholic, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mesquite will take on Arcadia at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Arcadia will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 197th, while Mesquite is ranked ninth). As for Seton Catholic, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Marcos de Niza at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th. Marcos de Niza has now lost 16 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 1.
