Wire-to-Wire: Hoban opened the season ranked as the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps/JJHuddle preseason state rankings, stayed there until the final poll and finished with a state title. The Knights championship is their second in a row. Hoban started playing football in 1955.
2. Quick strike: Hoban’s first three scoring drives were 1:03, 3:03 and :09. The Knights led 20-0 at the half. Big plays? Two of the touchdowns were a 49-yard run by
Todd Sibley Jr. and a 60-yard touchdown pass from
Danny Clark to
Garrett Houser.
3. Ground game: A week after holding Mr. Football winner
Michael Warren of Toledo Central Catholic to 18 yards on 15 carries, Trotwood could not duplicate the feat against Hoban. Sibley had 69 first-half yards on 11 carries. He finished with 151 yards and a touchdown on 17 totes.
4. Five of a kind: Trotwood-Madison dropped to 1-5 in state finals and moved into a second-place tie with Coldwater, Columbus DeSales and Mogadore for most state runner-up finishes. Ironton and Newark Catholic have finished runner-up six times.
5. Defense reigns: Hoban’s excelled. The Knights allowed 24 points in five playoff games and 115 points in 15 games. They had three interceptions in the state final.
