The Montezuma-Cortez Panthers can finally bid farewell to their three-game losing streak thanks to their game on Saturday. They took down Bayfield 69-55. The victory was just what Montezuma-Cortez needed coming off of a 64-28 loss in their prior match.
Leading Montezuma-Cortez to victory were Tay Wheat and Trey Hall. Wheat scored 13 points along with eight assists and six steals, while Hall scored 20 points along with six rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Hall has scored all season. Asher Bennett was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with five rebounds.
Several Wolverines players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Vincent Mccullough, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 15 rebounds. Mccullough hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for ten straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Lincoln Williams, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Montezuma-Cortez's win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-8. As for Bayfield, they dropped their record down to 1-13 with that loss, which was their third straight at home.
Montezuma-Cortez and the Falcons will face off at 2:00 p.m. on February 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Centauri presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Panthers in Colorado (the Falcons are ranked 80th, while the Panthers are ranked 202nd). As for Bayfield, they will head out on the road to challenge the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Dove Creek focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Friday.
