A feisty cat fight will be fought as St. John Paul II Panthers duke it out with Godby Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. St. John Paul II is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
St. John Paul II's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They came out on top against Taylor County by a score of 3-0. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Panthers.
St. John Paul II saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Levarius McClure II, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Godby). They blew past Gadsden County 21-1 on Tuesday. The Cougars have beaten the Jaguars the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Jaguars has come to flipping the script.
Jaylen Roque was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Godby is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 0-6 otherwise. Roque was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. What's more, he posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Israel Williams was a standout: he scored three runs and stole Four bases. while going 2-for-4. Godby is 2-1 when Williams posts two or more runs, but 0-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Edwin Ramirez, who scored three runs and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-2.
Godby always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .718. They are 2-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
St. John Paul II pushed their record up to 10-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Godby, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 2-7.
Everything went St. John Paul II's way against Godby when the teams last played back in April of 2022, as St. John Paul II made off with a 16-6 victory. Will St. John Paul II repeat their success, or does Godby have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
