The Weddington Warriors are taking a road trip to square off against the Marvin Ridge Mavericks at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Weddington has ten straight victories, Marvin Ridge has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.
Last Tuesday, Weddington was able to grind out a solid win over Cuthbertson, taking the game 3-1.
Weddington had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.
Weddington can attribute much of their success to Owen Conklin, who had 11 digs and one assist.
Weddington was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 14 aces. That's the most aces they've posted in their last six matches.
Meanwhile, Marvin Ridge didn't have quite enough to beat Covenant Day on Tuesday and fell 3-2.
Marvin Ridge started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The final score came out to 22-25, 15-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-8.
Marvin Ridge's loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Weddington, their victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-2.
Weddington took their win against Marvin Ridge in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 3-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
