Mountain Pointe is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Thursday. They will look to defend their home field against the Chaparral Firebirds at 3:45 p.m. Mountain Pointe is looking for their season's first victory.
On Tuesday, Mountain Pointe didn't have quite enough to beat Ironwood and fell 3-2.
Mountain Pointe saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Devin Montes, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and one run. Christian Huerta also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Chaparral). They were the clear victors by a 15-4 margin over Willow Canyon on Tuesday. With that win, the Firebirds brought their scoring average up to 7.5 runs per game.
Grafton Marshall Inman looked comfortable as he struck out ten batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tanner Anderson, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, nine RBI, and two doubles. Those nine RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jirah Jensen, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Chaparral always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Willow Canyon only posted an OBP of .333.
The victory made it two in a row for Chaparral and bumps their season record up to 4-2. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games. As for Mountain Pointe, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.
Mountain Pointe's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Pride have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Chaparral, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mountain Pointe continue to outrun the ball?
Mountain Pointe suffered a grim 15-2 defeat to Chaparral when the teams last played back in April of 2025. Can the Pride avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
