Abbeville (S.C.).
The Cavaliers had not lost a game since a 20-6 loss to Liberty (S.C.) on Aug. 26, 2011. Since then, Christ Church Episcopal had broken the state record of 41 wins in a row, held by Summerville under coach John McKissick, and won four state championships.
Christ Church Episcopal opened the season with a 36-14 win over Lee Central (Bishopville, S.C.), but was unable to overcome six turnovers in the loss to Abbeville.
"I'm proud of the streak. Streaks come and go," Cavaliers coach Don Frost told the Greenville Record. "Coach McKissick's went.
We happened to be the lucky ones to break it. Now we ran it up to 55,
and somebody will probably break that one at some point. But how we come
out of this will (determine) whether or not we can make a run for
another state championship."
Christ Church Episcopal's streak was one of three of the nation's longest that came to an end over the weekend. Booker T. Washington (Miami) fell to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 35-3, to end a 41-game win streak. Meanwhile, Fulton (Knoxville, Tenn.) saw its 37-game win streak end with a 49-18 loss to Maryville (Tenn.), which now leads the state of Tennessee with a 32-game win streak.
