Mary Cain of
Bronxville (N.Y.) set a national sophomore record Saturday when she won the girls 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes, 24.25 seconds during the New York State Indoor Championships at Cornell University.
Cain's time, which is No. 4 for all classes, erased the previous record of 4:27.57, which was held by Nicole Blood of Saratoga Springs (N.Y.).
Strymar Livingston of
Columbus (Bronx, N.Y.) won the 600 in 1:20.02, but didn't threaten his national record of 1:17.58.
Brandon Joyce of
Niagara Falls (N.Y.) cleared 6 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump.

St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) ran an outstanding 8:54.82 to set a meet record in the 2-mile run during the Eastern States Championships at the Armory in New York City. The previous record of 9:01.1 by Alberto Salazar had stood since 1976. Earlier he had ripped off a 4:06.4 anchor mile for the winning distance medley relay (10:10.70).

Bridgeton (N.J.) won the shot put with a big toss of 70 feet, 8 inches.

Woodbury (N.J.) doubled with victories in the long jump (23-7 1/4) and the 55 (6.46).

Hillhouse (New Haven, Conn.) senior Precious Holmes recorded a big triple during the New England Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. She won the 300 in 38.22, the 600 in 1:30.79 and anchored the victorious 1,600 relay to a 3:56.84 effort.
* Despite not being in the fast heat,
Classical (Providence, R.I.) standout Madeleine Berkson ran one of the fastest times ever turned in by a sophomore with a 2:50.11 clocking in the 1,000.
* Southern California athletes already are putting up impressive numbers outdoors. During the Eagle Invitational at Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Ethan Cochran of
Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, Calif.) threw the discus a career-best 200-10. Sensational
Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) freshman pole vaulter Kaitlyn Merritt cleared 12-10 1/4 to set a national record for age 14.
* Futsum Zeinasellasie, a senior from
North Central (Indianapolis), got off to a great start in his first meet by winning the 3,200 in a sizzling 9:00.93 during the MIC Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.
* Arman Hall of
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 400 in a superb 46.41 and also claimed the 200 in 21.14 during the Sam Burley Hall of Fame Invitational in Miami.

Lincoln (Gahanna, Ohio) standout Jake Blankenship pole vaulted 17-6 1/2 during the Oberlin High School Open at Oberlin College.
* Shelbi Vaughn, a 6-2 senior from
Mansfield Legacy (Texas), raised her national discus lead with a 175-9 effort during the Timberview Invitational in Arlington, Texas.
* The New Balance National Invitational, which will be held this Friday through Sunday at the Armory in New York City, already has set a record with more than 4,000 entries.
