Run defense has been somewhat of an issue for the top-ranked team in the MaxPreps Texas Top 25 Football Rankings, the Allen Eagles.
That defense will get a huge test on Friday when it faces Plano West running back Soso Jamabo.
With 1,711 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns in eight games, the 6-foot-2, 206-pound senior has separated himself from other top running backs in North Texas. Jamabo, who remains uncommitted to dozens of college suitors, has helped Plano West to seven wins in eight games, the only loss coming to rival Plano by three points.
Allen (8-0) owns a 35-game winning streak, dating back to midseason of 2012. The Eagles, despite returning only one defensive starter, are 6-0 in District 6-6A.
Eagles opponents are averaging 196 rushing yards per game. In winning state titles in Class 5A Division I the last two seasons, Allen held opponents to an average of 148 rushing yards.
Plano West is 5-1 in district play. The Wolves defense will be challenged by Allen quarterback Kyler Murray, who has thrown for 7,894 career yards and 87 touchdowns.
Elsewhere, No. 18 Lake Travis (Austin), coming off a 24-7 win over rival Westlake (Austin), faces a challenge from red-hot Bowie (Austin). Since opening the season with a one-point loss at Pflugerville, Bowie has won seven straight. Both teams are 6-0 in District 14-6A. Cedar Hill's 65-42 victory over DeSoto in last week's nationally televised showdown led to a shakeup in positions 2, 3 and 5 of the Texas Top 25.
