High school girls basketball rankings: Mater Dei returns to MaxPreps Top 25 on strength of 11-game win streak

Monarchs earned quality wins over Christ the King, No. 23 Bishop Gorman in past two weeks.

The arctic chill that's gripping much of the country has forced the postponement of several games involving teams in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings.

At the top of the list was a showdown Sunday between No. 1 Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) and No. 8 St. John's (Washington, D.C.), which was moved to Feb. 8.

Transitioning to games that were played, two of New Jersey's best met for the second time this season as No. 10 St. John-Vianney (Holmdel) knocked off No. 13 Red Bank Catholic (Red Bank) 61-52 behind 25 points from Pennsylvania commit Madison Kocis, reversing the result of the first meeting Jan. 6. A third matchup in the postseason is likely. 

Winners of 19 in a row, No. 20 Miami Country Day (Miami, Fla.) was one of two teams to enter the MaxPreps Top 25 this week after upending Montverde Academy 57-45 on Saturday. Rachael Luis and Jalynn Belton each scored 13 points in the victory.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) returns to the rankings at No. 21 after beating No. 23 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) 68-64 at the Nike Extravaganza. The Monarchs have won 11 in a row, including a 53-39 victory over once-ranked Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) on Jan. 16 at the Hoophall Classic.

Qandace Samuels scored her 1,000th career point in a Jan. 23 game win against Bishop O'Connell (Arlington, Va.).

2. Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.)

Kaleena Smith led five players in double figures with 36 points in a 110-70 win over Mission Hills on Saturday.

3. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.)

The Monarchs have raced past three WCAL opponents in the past two weeks by an average score of 72-25. 

4. Etiwanda (Calif.)
Record: 23-2 | Last week: 4
Florida commit Arynn Finley led the Eagles with 27 points while Chasity Rice and Aliyah Phillips each added 21 in a 104-73 win over Rancho Christian on Saturday.

5. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.)
Record: 21-2 | Last week: 5
Emilia Krstevski had 23 points and 12 boards while Jerzy Robinson added 12 points and Cherri Hatter chipped in 11 in an 82-32 win over Louisville (Woodland Hills).

6. Princess Anne (Virginia Beach, Va.)
Record: 17-0 | Last week: 6
Bahaar Grewal led the Cavaliers with 15 points in an 86-13 win over Bayside (Virginia Beach) on Saturday. 

7. Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis, Mo.)

Weather postponed two games for the Red Knights.

8. St. John's (Washington, D.C.)

Morgan Stewart is averaging 19.1 points per game for the Cadets while Camille Nesmith is chipping in 9.9 points per game.

Bella Amens led the Timberwolves with 22 points on 11 of 13 shooting in an 85-26 win over Tigard on Saturday. 

10. St. John-Vianney (Holmdel, N.J.)

Stella Lockhart scored 17 in the win over Red Bank Catholic while Gianna Sano added 10.

11. Johnston (Iowa)

Jenica Lewis, Kelli Kalb and Ari Phillips are averaging a combined 42.7 points per game for the Dragons.

12. Bullis (Potomac, Md.)
Record: 12-5 | Last week: 13
The Bulldogs beat Flint Hill (Oakton, Va.) 82-28 last Tuesday.

13. Red Bank Catholic (Red Bank, N.J.)

Addy Nyemchek had 25 points and Tessa Liggio added 14 in the loss to No. 10 St. John-Vianney.

14. Westlake (Austin, Texas)

The Chaparrals are averaging nearly 16 assists per night.

The Tigers are riding a 21-game win streak stretching back to last season.

16. Hoover (Ala.)

Khloe Ford had 20 points, Aaliyah Blanchard added 19 and freshman Kristen Winston scored 16 in a 61-54 win over Faith Family Academy (Dallas, Texas).

17. Arrowhead (Hartland, Wis.)

The Warhawks have a Tuesday showdown with on the bubble squad Wauwatosa East (Wauwatosa), which also enters the game unbeaten.

18. Wagner (San Antonio, Texas)
Record: 27-0 | Last week: 20
Juniors Nia McBride, Elle Williams and Kyzarriah Fox are all averaging double figures for the Thunderbirds.

19. Sage Hill (Newport Beach, Calif.)
Record: 21-4 | Last week: 25
Kamdyn Klamberg notched her 1,000th career point last week in a 79-41 win over St. Margaret's (San Juan Capistrano).

20. Miami Country Day (Miami, Fla.)

The Spartans have wins over Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), St. Anne's-Belfield (Charlottesville, Va.), St. Mary's (Lancaster, N.Y.) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale).
