Three weeks after
Gunner Stockton of
Rabun County (Tiger, Ga.) broke Deshaun Watson's
state record for total touchdowns the four-star quarterback has moved past another Georgia legend. Stockton broke former Cartersville standout Trevor Lawrence's record for career passing touchdowns Friday with his first TD pass of the night against Union County (Blairsville). He tossed his 162nd TD on a one-yard shovel pass to
Tate Ramey.
Stockton, a 6-foot-1 220-pound senior quarterback and four-year starter, has been one of the most prolific signal-callers in Peach State history. Entering Friday night's game he has accounted for 16,459 yards of total offense (12,445 passing, 4,014 rushing) and 232 total touchdowns.
The Georgia commit was one of 15 included on our
MaxPreps Football Player of the Year watch list earlier this month. Stockton has thrown for 2,927 yards and has 39 touchdowns against one interception through his first eight games. He's completing over 70 percent of his passes and has 598 yards rushing to go with nine more scores.
A couple other state records are within reach for the sixth-rated quarterback in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports composite.
He entered Friday night's matchup needing 1,458 yards passing to break Lawrence's mark of 13,902 career passing yards. If the Wildcats make it to the AA state championship game Stockton would need to average 243 yards passing per game to surpass Lawrence's record. He currently ranks fourth all-time in the state behind Lawrence, Watson and Jake Fromm.
A record well within reach is Watson's state mark of total offense. Entering tonight's game Stockton needs 676 yards of total offense to break Watson's record of 17,134 total yards.
After tonight's game Rabun County will get underway in the AA state playoffs. The Wildcats will be one of the favorites to win the state title and are the second-ranked team in AA according to our
computer rankings.
