Riders are set to drop in on the inaugural Hawaii High School Surfing Championship on Friday and Saturday at Ho'okipa Beach Park on Maui.
A total of 174 surfers — 87 boys and 87 girls — will compete from the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui and Oahu in shortboard, longboard and bodyboard competitions. Live results will be posted
here.
Turnout was huge for the first season with more than 600 surfers competing from more than 60 schools across the islands. In 2024, the state Board of Education approved surfing as a league sport and nine months ago sanctioned the state championship.

The state has had interscholastic surfing in Maui since 2014 but this is the first year for competition at the state level.
King Kekaulike (Pukalani) is the defending Maui boys and girls champion.
"We had a lot of participation — more participation than what I thought," Kaimuki athletic director and Oahu Interscholastic Association surf league adviser Reid Yoshikawa
told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
