Top-ranked Hutchinson survived the injury of one of its top players as the Salt Hawks defeated McPherson, 17-7.
Fullback Romero Cotton, who rushed for almost 1,400 yards as a junior, went down in the first quarter with an ankle injury. Sophomore Josh Smith filled the shoes of Cotton impressively, rushing for 165 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Hutchinson won its 24th straight game.
Uniontown move-in Gage McInnis added a rushing touchdown for Hutchinson.
Bryce Brown Scores Six in Victory
Bryce Brown wasted no time picking up from where he left off as a sophomore. The junior running back, one of the top players nationally in the Class of 2009, rushed for five touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass as Wichita East downed Wichita North, 46-2.
Brown rushed for 173 yards on just 14 carries. His scores came on runs of 21, 58, 49, 10 and 2 yards.
St. Marys Makes Quick Work of Fredonia
Last season, St. Marys didn't get off to the best of starts. After defeating Fredonia, the Bears dropped their next four games before embarking on an improbable run all the way to the state finals.
This season, St. Mary's looks as if it is going to be capable of avoiding the same misfortune. In the first quarter of a 52-6 victory over Fredonia, the Bears kept the scoreboard operator busy with 40 points.
Dodge City's Pick For Real
Dodge City quarterback Kale Pick wasted no time proving why he's already verbally committed to Arkansas. In his senior debut, Pick threw for 253 yards in a 47-13 victory over Wichita South.
Brayton Meier made an impressive debut in a Dodge City uniform after transferring from Cimaron. Meier picked up 127 receiving yards in the victory. As for Pick's usual go-to guy, Mykael Thompson, he only had four receptions on the evening. Three of them were for touchdowns. Thompson also added a 67-yard interception return for a score.
Player of the Week: Logan Dold- QB- Garden Plain
Sure, it's easy to give the nod to Bryce Brown every week. But Logan Dold got off to a great start to his 2007 campaign with 186 yards rushing on just 10 carries and five touchdowns in a 49-14 victory over Douglass. Dold also threw for 175 yards in the victory.
Honorable Mention
Brian Palermo- Chase County: In a 34-14 victory over Herrington, Palermo rushed for 270 yards and four touchdowns on just 15 carries.
Tate Arnold- Smith Center: Arnold only had eight carries, but took advantage. Arnold rushed for 146 yards and five touchdowns in a 60-0 victory over Norton.
Corbin Stanley- Columbus: Stanley threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-21 victory over Iola.
Taylor Counts- Salina Central: Counts lit up Valley Central for four touchdowns in a 52-7 rout.
